Women in industrial design

— Empowering Design: The Impact of Women in Industrial Design

This blog post is going to look a little different compared to my previous blog posts, but this topic remains near and true to my own heart. In the dynamic world of industrial design, the importance of diverse representation cannot be overstated. As a woman navigating this creative realm, I've experienced firsthand the transformative power of seeing women in design positions.

Referencing back to my most recent blog post, I mentioned I showed up to work one day wearing a bright lime green sweater. That day I had the pleasure of meeting Taya from Saalt Co. Our discussion centered around Saalt's innovative products, particularly around the now launched Saalt Steamer. Little did I know that this encounter would spark inspiration in Taya and lead her on a journey to become an industrial designer.

After developing the Saalt Steamer alongside Taya, on a separate video call with me, she divulged in how one day, she hopped on a video call, and there was a girl in a lime green sweater that showed her she could be just as innovative, intelligent, and creative as that girl sitting across her screen. I always think back to this whenever I feel my own imposter syndrome crawling out from the depths to remind myself that I am someone's inspiration. The lime green sweater became a symbol of empowerment, showcasing the impact of representation. Taya's decision to pursue a career in design after our conversations highlights the ripple effect of visibility. Seeing women actively engaged in the design process serves as an inspiration for others, breaking down barriers and fostering a sense of belonging.

The design industry benefits immensely from diverse perspectives. Women bring unique insights, creative approaches, and a fresh lens to product development. By embracing inclusivity, we enrich the design landscape, ensuring that products are not only functional and aesthetically pleasing but also resonate with a broader audience.

The lime green sweater story is a testament to the profound influence that women can have on each other within the design community. It emphasizes the need for continued efforts to amplify women's voices, encourage aspiring designers, and foster an environment where everyone, regardless of gender, feels empowered to contribute.

As we celebrate the strides made in diversifying the design field, let the lime green sweater serve as a symbol of empowerment, a reminder that each woman in design contributes to a collective narrative of creativity, innovation, and positive change. The more we see women thriving in design positions, the more we inspire the next generation to envision themselves shaping the future of industrial design.
