Happy national ID day

— Unveiling the Everyday Magic: A Personal Take on National Industrial Design Day

Today is March 5th, National Industrial Design Day. So, what does this mean to you?

The majority of people navigate the world with little awareness of industrial design. For example, Bic ballpoint pen, a seemingly simple yet ingenious product. Created by a late professor at my college, this pen has become a staple in people's day-to-day lives. Despite its affordability and straightforward design, its simplicity is intentional. The Bic ballpoint pen was crafted to seamlessly integrate into people's lives, offering a user-friendly and accessible writing experience. It serves as a testament to how thoughtful design, even in seemingly mundane objects, can have a significant impact on daily routines.

Industrial Design is the subtle influence that turns ordinary encounters into moments of delight. On March 5th, 2015, it was declared by U.S. Rep. Gerald E. Connolly, that Industrial designers “improve our lives in every way and are worthy of our recognition.”

Establishing a national day of recognition in industrial design aims to raise awareness about the profession and the broader field of design. For individuals outside the design realm, it offers a chance to understand the advantages of industrial design and its influence on everyday life.

Take some time today to look at the things you choose to surround yourself with, and appreciate them for their thoughtful design, even if you weren’t aware of it at first.

Happy National ID Day to the people I’ve worked beside and have seen grow since.
